FILMMAKER & DESIGNER
I make 3 things—short video profiles for clients, big art projects with artist Tara Cooper, and feature documentaries.
The things I make are based on true stories. The key to a great story is fieldwork and footwork. I travel all over to collect stories—from the basement archive of a museum in Montreal, to a dinosaur dig in the badlands of Alberta.
My approach is based on the theories, techniques, and tools of creative non-fiction. I’m a big fan of Ira Glass and his motto that a good story should have an anecdote and a reflection.
Whether that’s a short profile for a client, or a big metal sculpture, it’s all about telling a sticky story. But, what makes a story sticky? My answer—avoid generalizations; be specific and don’t forget about the unexpected. Look for disruptions. Look for surprise.
When I’m not making things I teach design and filmmaking—it’s a real hoot, and I’m good at it.
Here’s some of the stuff I’ve done.
